Cremer, Sir William Randal

Cremer, Sir William Randal (krē'mur) [key], 18281908, English pacifist. At first active in trade unionism, he gradually expanded his work and interests, becoming one of the most active advocates of international arbitration. In 1871 he became secretary of the Workmen's Peace Association, a position he held until his death. For his efforts in the cause of international arbitration Cremer was awarded the 1903 Nobel Peace Prize. He gave most of the stipend in trust to the International Arbitration League. He was knighted in 1907.
