Writer and social observer considered a master of humor and sarcasm and one of the most influential modern American writers. His The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) is often called the first modern American novel. His other books include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), The Prince and the Pauper (1882), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889).
